The key to having a painting that captures your pet's likeness all starts with the photo you supply. A well- taken reference photo goes such a long way. Here are a few helpful tips when it comes to selecting your pet's reference photo. If you can't choose, feel free to send me more than one and I can help you decide!

1. Take the photo on your pet's eye level as you really want a mugshot angle rather than a shot from above. This will require some creativity and awkward positioning depending on the size of your pet, but it really is worth it for the final outcome! You’ll be able to see all of your pet's features clearly and the proportions for the portrait itself will be much more accurate and true to form. If your pet is little, try setting them on a chair to bring them up to your level. If your dog has a longer snout, you can catch them at a slight angle rather than straight on.
2. Natural light is your pet's best friend (next to you of course!). Take the photo in a well-lit area, for example, outside or near a window. Stay away from overly bright or very dark areas, and avoid using a flash. This way you should capture the shadows, highlights and true colours that help me make your painting closest to your pet's true likeness. Having a clear shot of the eyes is key so definitely make them your prime focus!
3. High resolution photos are essential. Unless you have a brilliant zoom camera lense, take your photo close up to avoid any pixelation. iPhone photos are fine, as long as you supply the original image (no screenshots!). High quality images give me plenty of fine detail to work with.
4. If you want a painting which is more expressive, why not take photos after a walk or play session when your dog is panting? This will help you capture them with a grin and your portrait will reflect that their playful personality!
5. If you're having trouble holding their attention try getting someone else to hold a toy or treat just out of frame of your lens to get them to focus.
6. It can be difficult to get the photo right, but be patient. Try different settings and methods. It'll be worth it once you capture their character and the furry face you love.
